The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was created to protect such information, yet AI-driven dating features often process this data without sufficient transparency.

One major issue is the lack of clear consent. Under GDPR, users must be explicitly informed about how their data is used, yet most dating apps do not make it obvious that AI is modifying their interactions, ranking their profiles, and crafting their messages. If an AI assistant suggests responses based on an algorithm or changes a user’s visibility in search results without their knowledge, this could fall under automated decision-making, which is restricted under Article 22. Similarly, if an app’s AI alters user visibility without disclosing how or why, that could be seen as manipulative behavior. The Digital Services Act (DSA) requires platforms to prevent deceptive AI use, meaning dating apps may soon face increased legal scrutiny over their algorithms and engagement tactics.

Psychological Impact of AI-Powered Dating

Beyond regulation, AI-driven dating apps are changing how people experience relationships, and not necessarily for the better. The more users rely on AI-generated conversations, the harder real-life interactions become. A person who spends months using AI to craft witty, well-timed messages may find themselves struggling on an actual date without a chatbot feeding them responses. Instead of building social confidence, AI can create a false sense of competence, making real-world interactions feel awkward or even intimidating.

Dating apps have already gamified romance, turning connections into a system of swipes, algorithms, and engagement loops. AI makes this even worse by removing authenticity from conversations. Instead of two people genuinely getting to know each other, AI-driven dating turns human connection into a formulaic process. When interactions feel scripted and artificial, users may start to detach emotionally, leading to increased loneliness, frustration, and burnout.
